-African wild dogs are the most carnivorous members of the dog family (canidae).
-They have the longest gestation period of any living canid (71 – 75 days).
-Each individual dog has a unique coat pattern.
-They have the highest hunting success rate of any predator in Africa (60 – 85 %).
-As they age, the coloration of their coat starts to disintegrate, and the
black skin underneath becomes visible…
-The females are the ones that disperse from their natal pack when reaching
adult age, not the males. Groups are made up mainly of brothers, sons, fathers,
uncles, and sometimes even grandfathers.
-There is only one breeding female in the pack, rarely two. Only the dominant
male in the group gets to mate with her.
-They establish territories that are 80 – 880 sq. miles large. Depending on prey
density it can be larger or smaller…
-Working in packs they can even send hyenas running – given that they at least
have a 2 vs 1 advantage in numbers.
-People often kill them because they see their method of killing prey as "cruel"
because they eat them alive.
-African wild dogs are mainly diurnal (active during the day).
-They can attain speeds of up to 40 mph in short bursts, but maintain about 35
mph…
That is all for now !
"Wild dogs have sparse hair…, yearlings have more hair than adult dogs, and old dogs can become almost hairless."
